Could be you get a fixed sum or get paid per printed page and afterwards get rewared for sold copies once the publisher has earned the money you already received for your work... I remember those lengthy contracts from ages ago when I was a co-author myself. It's a good chance to get a reputation and earn money during holidays... I'm looking forward to buying a copy of oxur book - at least in case you don't plan to get it published in French only! ;) Surely it depends on your contracts.
